Clark County School District Reorganizes Up For Last Vote

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lawmakers are expected to vote on regulations that would shift the balance of power in the Clark County School District.

The 12 members of the Legislative Commission are set to decide Friday whether to adopt regulations that would reorganize the nation’s fifth largest school district. The rules unanimously passed the Nevada Board of Education last week.

The plan calls for moving power from a central office to the more than 300 schools in the district. Principals and their volunteer boards would control about 80 percent of the money flowing to their schools.

Proponents of the reorganization plan argue that the status quo hasn’t improved the state’s bottom-ranking public school system.

Critics wonder whether the restructure will distribute resources equitably.

The new format would be implemented by the 2017-2018 school year.
