LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials have identified a gunman who was killed in a shootout with a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper.
The Clark County coroner’s office confirmed Sunday that 41-year-old Matthew Gibbon died from a gunshot wound to the head.
His death has been classified as a homicide.
Authorities say Gibbon was one of two passengers in a vehicle that was pulled over for a traffic violation early Friday on Boulder Highway south of U.S. 95.
Patrol spokeswoman Chelsea Stuenkel says Gibbon fled the car.
The trooper chased him and gunfire was exchanged.
Stuenkel says the suspect was shot dead at the scene and a bullet had hit the trooper’s badge.
The trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.
Las Vegas police are handling the investigation.
