LAS VEGAS (AP) — A defense lawyer says he’s investigating whether drug addiction plays a role in the arrest of the son of a Las Vegas elected official on multiple armed robbery and burglary charges.

Attorney David Chesnoff said Wednesday he may also seek the release from jail of 27-year-old Shane Ross, pending a preliminary hearing Oct. 5.

The son of Las Vegas Mayor Pro Tem Steve Ross has been held on $60,000 bail since his arrest Friday in a string of Las Vegas-area armed robberies.

The family acknowledged in a statement that Shane Ross has struggled with addiction.

Police say the arrest came after robberies at a fast-food restaurant, a nearby chain drug store and a doughnut shop, and appeared to solve a string of robberies involving a motorcycle rider wearing a helmet.
