LAS VEGAS (AP) — A public review of the fatal New Year’s Eve shooting of an Arizona fugitive by Las Vegas police is set to begin this week.
KSNV-TV reports that a fact-finding hearing will take place Monday morning and stream live on a Clark County website and closed-circuit TV.
Police shot and killed 23-year-old Keith Childress on Dec. 31, 2015 after he ignored orders to drop a cellphone that officers mistook for a gun.
Authorities learned of missteps after the shooting.
Police did not know that U.S. marshals were trying to apprehend Childress until about 20 minutes before the shooting.
Police were mistakenly told he was wanted for attempted murder.
Childress had fled sentencing in Phoenix for home invasion.
An ombudsman representing the public and Childress’ family will be present.
