HENDERSON, NV (KXNT) – A lightning strike to a Henderson home during an overnight thunderstorm sparked an attic fire early Thursday, Henderson officials said.
Firefighters were called out to the home on the 2700 block of Moliere Court, south of Democracy Drive in the Madeira Canyon community around 4 a.m. Thursday, a Henderson city statement reported.
Investigators said lightning struck an exhaust vent on the home’s roof, superheating the structure and igniting the fire in the attic.
A woman in the home at the time told firefighters she heard a loud noise, followed by alerts from the home’s smoke detectors before calling 911. The resident and her dog both escaped the home safely.
Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to locate the fire, then cut a hole in the roof before quickly extinguishing the flames. The fire did not extend further into the house and damage was estimated at $75,000.
