Washoe Sheriff Getting Money to Screen Untested Rape Kits

LAS VEGAS (AP) — State officials are using money they won in a settlement with Chase bank to try to work through a backlog of thousands of untested rape evidence kits.

The Nevada Board of Examiners voted Tuesday to pay the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office about $414,000 in settlement money, which will cover testing for 610 rape kits.

Officials with the Nevada Attorney General’s Office estimate there are close to 8,000 untested kits around the state and some are from cases that date back 30 years. Testing them can lead to DNA matches with people who have come in contact with the criminal justice system, and can help crack unsolved sexual assault cases.

Nevada lawmakers voted in December to earmark about $3.7 million in money from settlements and grants toward eliminating the backlog.
