(Las Vegas, KXNT) – The strip’s newest resort is set to open in just a few days, breathing new life into an area that has been desolate since the legendary Sahara Hotel closed down a few years ago.
The SLS Las Vegas, which describes itself as affordable luxury, will officially open its doors later this week. All 1,600 rooms have been renovated, along with a revamped casino area. Ten restaurants and 3 nightclubs will set up shop inside, attracting a younger crowd.
While the glitz, glamour and media buzz surrounding a new hotel gets everyone talking, Las Vegas locals understand the deeper meaning of this opening. After being hit hard by the recession, many say the SLS Las Vegas is just what the north end of the strip needed. An area that has been plagued with vacant lots and a boarded up casino, the SLS is the shiny new kid on the block that is expected to spur business in the area.
“I think this is great. This area was looking a little rough, rundown so I’m excited to see this opening, ” said local Daniel Delgado.
Like many locals, Delgado says this is sign of an improving economy. The SLS Las Vegas says close to 3,500 hundred employees have been hired at the property. For years, the only viable business at the intersection of Sahara and Las Vegas Blvd. has been the Bonanza Gift Shop.
“We welcome the SLS with open arms, “said manager Angie Hurt. “We have been the only thing really holding up this end of the strip and so this is definitely going to increase foot traffic to our store and really just re-energize this corner.”
In addition to the SLS, a Walgreen’s is under construction at the northeast corner of the intersection. A concert venue is also expected at the southwest corner.
The SLS Las Vegas will open its doors on August 23rd.
