RENO, Nev. (AP) — The mercury soared past the century mark across much of northern Nevada, shattering records in a number of places and reaching 108 degrees in Lovelock.

Several cities posted record highs for the second day in a row, including Reno, which followed Sunday’s 103 degrees with a high of 105 on Monday — the hottest for those dates in 42 years.

The National Weather Service said Monday’s reading was 2 degrees warmer than the previous record set in 1972 at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

The 108 degrees in Lovelock about 100 miles east of Reno on Interstate 80 broke the old record of 106 set in 1933. Fallon’s 106 eclipsed the previous record of 105 dating to 1925.

Other records included 104 in Elko and 102 in Carson City.
