( Las Vegas, NV ) – The North Las Vegas woman suspected of abducting her 3-year-old daughter from a family gathering over the 4th of July weekend is in custody.

35-year-old Shelly Mitchell was arrested over the weekend at a southeast valley extended stay motel.

The girl, 3-year-old Katies Battle, was with her and police say she appeared to be unharmed.

The toddler was placed in the care of the County’s Child Protective Services. Mitchell is charged with parental abduction.

Investigators say the girl has been in foster care since being taken from the family by Child Protective Services a year and a half ago. The father has reportedly been trying to regain custody of her.

They say the youngster’s foster mom dropped her off at her biological father’s place near Las Vegas Blvd North and Lake Mead for a scheduled visit over the long holiday weekend.

Earlier reports indicated Mitchell may not have been invited to the family gathering but showed up anyway and took the 3-year-old with her when she left.
