Arizona Town Protests US Border Patrol Presence

AMADO, Ariz. (AP) — Residents of a small town near the southern Arizona border have launched a campaign to remove a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint located about 20 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Many of the residents of Arivaca say they are often harassed by border agents as they go in and out of the small town for every day necessities like groceries. They want the checkpoint to be removed.

The border patrol says checkpoints outside of ports of entry are crucial to deterring human and drug smugglers. They cited a recent incident in which suspected smugglers averted the checkpoint and drove through a ranch just south of it with a vehicle full of marijuana.
