New Program Helps Unemployed Get Back To Work

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor could help some of Nevada’s long-term unemployed get back in the game.

Officials with the state’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said they plan to use the money for a public-private partnership that gives businesses a chance to try out jobseekers risk-free.

The program, run by an organization called The Workplace, includes a five-week preparatory period designed to sharpen employees’ job skills. Completing the program qualifies them for eight weeks of subsidized employment, which gives employers a risk-free opportunity to evaluate participants and consider hiring them.

State officials say employers often pass over people who have long been out of a job for and assume their skills have declined.

Nevada is one of 32 states that received the grant.
