BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) — A 37-year-old old man is dead after reportedly chasing a runaway raft that had blown away in the high winds at Lake Mohave.

Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area say they received reports a little after 12:30 p.m. Sunday that the man had gone underwater.

Members of a diving class who were training nearby found the man about 40 feet underwater and brought him to the surface.

Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at an Arizona hospital a little after 1:30 p.m.

Officials with the National Park Service say winds were gusting nearly 20 mph at the time of the incident, and the man hadn’t been wearing a life jacket.

He was from Bullhead City, Arizona, but his name was not immediately released.
