(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–Clark County will assume control of newsracks on the Strip beginning in January.
The newsracks have been described as an eyesore and a safety concern for years, but the county has been thwarted by constitutional issues in the past when it tried to regulate them.
Owners of the current racks argued they have lots of money tied up in them, and have worked hard to make sure they meet current requirements.
Commissioners voted Tuesday to install county-owned newsracks and allow applicants to obtain permits to operate them. Current owners will have priority for the permits.
The new racks are expected to be in place by mid-January.
