Judge: Union Wrongly Pressured Casino Worker

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The National Labor Relations Board has ruled in favor of a casino restaurant worker who says she was threatened with the loss of her benefits and her seniority if she didn’t pay dues to a powerful Las Vegas union.

The board last week sided with Paris casino snack bar attendant Nani Sugianto, and ordered officials with the Culinary and Bartenders’ unions to stop pressuring employees into membership. The unions must also notify members of their right to join or stay out of a union.

A decision filed May 2 says Sugianto had canceled her membership but was told by a shop steward that if she didn’t pay dues, it would be bad for her family.

The steward had a different account of the conversation, but a judge sided with Sugianto.
