(LAS VEGAS,KXNT)–Horse-drawn carriages have gotten the green light in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas City Council voted narrowly to allow the carriages in the downtown area, but there are a number of restrictions. The program will be re-evaluated after twelve months. Carriages are not allowed on Las Vegas Blvd. or Fremont Street. They cannot operate between 3pm and 6pm during afternoons.
The horse carriages are considered another tourism attraction for downtown. But the idea got a negative reaction among some animal rights activists and residents alike.
“There’s going to be a huge push back if this is allowed to happen. For two carriages to bring so much negativity when there is are so many positive things going on downtown, its just wrong”, said Gina Greison, a local animal rights activist.
After the 4-3 vote in favor of the measure, Mayor Carolyn Goodman addressed operators of carriages, saying “Even though you may have gotten some negative votes, you have a twelve month period for the city–and you–see if this works, in the best interests of everybody included.
