Las Vegas, NV – A new battle may be brewing between Top Rank and MGM after its CEO blasted the strip resort for it’s promotion of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s upcoming bout during Fight Week featuring two of Top Rank’s fighters.
Bob Arum took exception to promotional posters for the Mayweather/Maidana fight placed nearby, and in some cases adjacent to those of, Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley Jr’s rematch which is scheduled to take place on Saturday night. Mayweather/Maidana is exactly three weeks later.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Arum introduced Richard Sturm, the president of entertainment and sports for MGM Resorts as “…the president of hanging posters and decorations for the wrong fight…” A light smattering of uncomfortable applause from the gathered media followed.
Arum wasn’t nearly finished.
He went on to suggest that the Venetian would handle things differently going so far as to compare the financial health of the two corporations.
A 25-story banner of Floyd Mayweather Jr. adorns MGM Grand’s exterior to promote the May 3rd bout also at the Grand Garden Arena.
Top Rank and Golden Boy stopped talking about a so-called “Dream Matchup” nearly four years ago and, as each fighter ages in to their mid to late 30’s, some wonder if that dream will ever come true.
