Costumed Character Is Really A Police Officer

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police plan to put leprechaun on a street corner near one Las Vegas school in a bid to highlight the importance of crosswalk safety.

The UNLV Safe Community Partnership says an officer dressed as a bright green Irish folk character will be working Friday morning on Desert Inn Road near Cameron Street and Cashman Middle School.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Safe Community Partnership says Las Vegas and Clark County school police and Nevada Highway Patrol troopers will be nearby looking for jaywalkers and motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians.

Partnership director Erin Breen says the idea is to raise awareness and cut down on the number of pedestrians killed in and around Las Vegas.

Breen says fatalities have doubled since 2011, and rose sharply in 2013.
