(Carson City, NV) — Work on Boulder City’s highway bypass has been delayed by the discovery of asbestos.
UNLV researchers discovered the naturally-occurring mineral late last year.
Governor Brian Sandoval, who sits on the state Transportation Board, calls it a “bombshell” for the $600 million project.
The board has allocated $400,000 for more studies, and a contract for a frontage road has been canceled.
The first phase of the bypass was scheduled to be completed by early 2018. It’s unclear how the asbestos discovery will affect the timeline.
