(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–An 18 year old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting of a man outside of a convenience store at 21st and Elm earlier this month.
The District Attorney announced charges against Alan Sosa in the killing of Juan Cervantes, who police say encountered a group of young people before and after he entered the store on March 1st.
Following the shooting, police released surveillance video of several people in the store prior to the shooting, hoping the public could help identify the possible suspects.
A police report says Cervantes entered the store where his wife was on a cell phone with her sister, and told her that they were leaving because a man had just pulled a gun on him outside.
The report says as the couple drove away from the parking lot, a group of young people signaled Mata to stop the car. The police account says a gunman fired a shot at Mata, which missed. As she scrambled to call 9-1-1 on her cell phone, says says, the man fired twice more at her husband, who was rushing toward her after the first shot.
Police say a person who had called 9-1-1 about the incident, and another citizen who identified Sosa as having been involved in previous armed holdups, helped identify the suspect.
The report says Sosa was subsequently identified through photos and phone numbers on his Facebook account.
