(Boulder City, NV, KXNT)-The 4th of July party will go on, just not at the location campers expect. The Boulder City Council has decided to close the popular El Dorado Valley dry lake bed for the July 4th holiday.
The popular party spot has attracted campers and revelers for years and has grown substantially. Last year, 3,000 to 5,000 were anticipated. The massive crowd participates in a number of activities, including drinking and shooting fireworks. City Manager David Fraser says it’s a bad combination and has the potential to be dangerous. The Boulder City Police Department and fire department is already burdened for the holiday, monitoring the annual Damboree event at Veterans Memorial Park.
“At the very same time, we have 15,000 people at another city park for our fireworks display and so given that we have as many visitors in town as residents that day, it stretches our first responders pretty thin, ” explained Fraser.
Fraser says closing the park for a few days is the city’s way of preventing a major incident. They are working to get the word out now before revelers make the drive to Boulder City only to find the lake bed closed for the holiday.
The El Dorado Valley dry lake bed will be closed from July 3rd to July 5th.
