(LAS VEGAS, KXNT, ASSOCIATED PRESS)–A suspect was shot and killed by law officers Friday afternoon on the side of the road of State Route 159 in the Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area.

The dead suspect was described only as a black male.

NHP spokesman Trooper Jeremy Eliot tells KXNT police answered calls of a pedestrian along the road who may have been interfering with people enjoying the recreation in the canyon. Within moments of police arriving, the encounter escalated into an altercation. Eliot says police heard gunshots on the police radio.

None of the law officers was hurt.

That section of Route 159 at mile-marker 11 remained closed in both directions.

Police could not say if the suspect was armed, which officer or officers fired, or how many shots were fired.

“The officers on scene were obviously presented with a situation where they thought either their lives were in imminent jeopardy or the threat was great enough to threaten the public’s safety as well”, said Eliot.
