Trial Set In Teen Kidnapping
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former schoolteacher pleaded not guilty in Nevada state court to charges including kidnapping, child abuse and making pornographic images of a 16-year-old girl found living at his Henderson apartment last November.
A judge scheduled Melvyn Perry Sprowson Jr. for trial March 24 on charges that could get him life in prison if he’s convicted.
Sprowson’s attorney, John Momot, maintains that the girl had a history of luring adult men into romantic relationships.
Authorities say the teen ran away from home Aug. 28, and was found living with the 45-year-old Sprowson nine weeks later.
Sprowson was dismissed as a kindergarten teacher in Las Vegas after his arrest.
Records show he resigned in 2012 from the Los Angeles Unified School District amid accusations of improper touching and conduct involving female students.
