MESA, Ariz. (AP) — A Mesa kindergarten teacher accused of pulling the shirt off a 6-year-old student in class has been released from jail on his own recognizance.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 54-year-old Thomas Washburn had his initial court appearance Friday and was ordered to wear an ankle bracelet for electronic monitoring.
Washburn doesn’t have a lawyer yet.
He was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of 25 counts of indecent exposure and one count of child abuse.
Washburn allegedly yelled at the girl in front of 24 other students and one adult aide at Adams Elementary School.
The student reportedly began crying and hid in her shirt.
When Washburn asked her to stop and she didn’t comply, he allegedly pulled her shirt off and left her that way for 10 minutes before returned her clothing.
