LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Christmas tree recycling operation is getting a boost in the Las Vegas area, with 34 sites open and support from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and business partners.

Officials say about 200,000 trees are sold in southern Nevada every year, but only about 7 percent were recycled last year into mulch for parks and gardens.

UNLV Rebel Recycling Program chief Tara Pike-Nordstrom says there are 13 new tree drop-off sites this year in Clark County, including 11 at Lowe’s home improvement stores.

The collection effort runs until Jan. 15 at community locations in Boulder City, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Las Vegas.
