CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada prison officials say an autopsy will be conducted on the body of a 60-year-old inmate from Virginia who died last week.
The Nevada Department of Corrections issued a statement Monday saying Cornelius Acres was terminally ill, and died Dec. 17 at a Northern Nevada Correctional Center medical facility in Carson City.
Acres had been in Nevada prisons under an interstate corrections agreement since June 1997, serving a life sentence for attempted capital murder in Virginia.
Prison officials say Acres told them he had no family or next of kin.
A Nevada law passed this year requires an autopsy following inmate deaths.
But prisons Director Greg Cox told Gov. Brian Sandoval and other officials this month that prison officials may have discretion about whether to order the exam.
