GEORGE NOORY IN LAS VEGAS: Get tickets now -- be there June 9!

LAS VEGAS (KXNT) — Railroad officials say a person was hit and killed by an Illinois-bound freight train north of Las Vegas.

Union Pacific spokesperson Aaron Hunt says the crash happened a little after 6 a.m., west of Interstate 15 and south of Moapa.  Hunt tells KXNT the male trespasser was walking on the tracks at the time of the accident.  It is illegal to be on train tracks, other than at a specified crossing.  Hunt says there is no crossing where the collision took place.  However, Hunt adds the train did try to stop in time, but a train of that size typically needs one mile to completely come to a stop.

Clark County coroner’s officials didn’t have information on the male pedestrian’s identity.

Union Pacific officials say the train’s crew members were relieved of their duties and were placed in a peer counseling support program.
