More Nevada Courts Needed?

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A report by and about Nevada courts says 52 state judges in the busy Clark County courthouse in Las Vegas are each handling an average of 1,840 cases per year.

More than 1,200 of those civil, criminal and other cases were appealed to the state Supreme Court in 2013, according to the Annual Report of the Nevada Judiciary.

In all, more than 2,300 cases from around the state made their way to the state high court during the fiscal year ending June 30.

The 52-page document being made public Tuesday points to clogs in courthouses and makes a case for voters next year to approve a proposed constitutional amendment to create a statewide appellate court.

The mid-level court would filter cases before they reach the seven Supreme Court justices.
