(Las Vegas, KXNT)- A Las Vegas man is in stable condition at Sunrise Hospital after being shot by police. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says 39-year old Jose Luis Aguilar pointed a shotgun at officers, who then fired shots at the man.
It took place close to 9:30 Monday night on the 3200 block of University Avenue. An arrest report shows Aguilar’s roommate called police saying Aguilar was suicidal and was injecting the dog’s insulin. He was not acting violent and did not have a mental disorder.
When police arrived on the scene,a Metro officer spotted Aguilar walking down the stairs, holding a shotgun. Officers retreated to a position of cover outside of the home. The suspect made his way to the driveway where he was issued verbal commands to drop his weapon and lie on the ground. Aguilar eventually followed those commands; however, as officers walked towards the suspect to restrain him, Metro says Aguilar abruptly jumped up, grabbed his shotgun and pointed it at approaching officers.
Two Metro officers discharged their weapons. Aguilar was struck in his lower body and immediately fell to the ground. Police were able to restrain him after a brief struggle.
Aguilar, who is sometimes known as Barrios-Aguilar, has been booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting a public officer with a firearm. The Metro officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.
