(Las Vegas, NV) — The Metro Police Department is reminding people that the crime rate ticks up during the holiday season. They say it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.

Crime Prevention Specialist, Kathy Perkins says we all need to be responsible when hosting parties. If you are attending a party, know your limits. Some people aren’t used to drinking alcohol year round, so they don’t know how much they can handle.

When doing your holiday shopping, Perkins says you shouldn’t shop alone. Also, park your car in a safe area because you may go into a store when it’s light outside, and come out when it’s dark.

At home, make sure to keep your Christmas presents and shopping bags away from the windows.  Also don’t open the door to strangers and make sure packages aren’t left on the front porch.
