CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada officials have renamed the state teacher of the year award after the man who died trying to stop a shooter at Sparks Middle School.
State superintendent Dale Erquiaga announced Monday that the 2014 award will be named after math teacher Michael Landsberry. He says Landsberry’s widow was notified and supports the new name.
Witnesses say they saw 45-year-old Landsberry walk calmly toward 12-year-old Jose Reyes on the schoolyard Oct. 21 and asked him to put down the gun. The boy killed Landsberry and injured two students before taking his own life.
Erquiaga says Landsberry showed an extraordinary level of dedication to his students and professional poise on his final day as a teacher.
The winner of the award has been selected and will be announced later this month.
