KEARNS, Utah (AP) — Police say a teenager who claimed he was shot during a Kearns home-invasion robbery staged by two black men has admitted making up the story.
Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says the 17-year-old boy could be charged with filing a false police report after detectives submit the case to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.
The teen called 911 on Saturday night to report a home-invasion robbery and shooting, saying he exchanged gunfire with the suspects and had been shot.
Hoyal says police were unable to find the suspects during a search of the area and later determined evidence at the home was not consistent with the story that was told.
During an interview with detectives, the boy admitted that the robbery was staged and the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
He was listed in fair and stable condition at the hospital.
