GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) — An 81-year-old Gardnerville man accused of shooting and killing his caretaker has been charged with murder.
Douglas County authorities say Melvin Norlund remained jailed Friday and is scheduled to make a court appearance Monday.
Norlund is charged with shooting and killing 51-year-old Catherine Mary Costanza with a shotgun. Authorities said Costanza, of Concord, Calif., was living with Norlund and taking care of him.
Investigators say the shooting happened Thursday afternoon at a home in the Fish Springs area of Gardnerville. Norlund then went to a neighbor’s house and reported what happened. He was taken into custody without incident when deputies arrived.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Pat Brooks says Norlund told investigators the shooting occurred during an altercation.
