Child Deaths Decline In Clark County

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas say the number of child deaths in Clark County has steadily declined over the past few years, but they’re recommending more educational campaigns to bring that figure down further.

An annual report released Monday by UNLV’s Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy shows the number of deaths is down from 311 in 2008 to 222 in 2012.

More than half of the fatalities in 2012 were natural, while 66 were accidents. Eight children under the age of 17 died in homicides, five died in suicides, and the cause of death couldn’t be determined in 16 cases.

Researchers recommend educating families on safe sleeping environments and motor vehicle safety to prevent further deaths.
