(Las Vegas, KXNT) – A Clark County School District elementary school teacher has been arrested on charges of kidnapping and child abuse. Melvyn Sprowson, a kindergarten teacher from Wengert Elementary, was taken into custody on Friday by CCSD school police.
Bail for Sprowson was set at $530,000 during a brief court appearance Wednesday morning.
Police say Sprowson and the 16 year old girl met several months ago on a social media site. The juvenile had been reported missing by her mother on August 29, 2013. However, further reports indicate she may have been missing since as early as late July. Social media communication between the two made Sprowson a person of interest. He was initially questioned by police on October 31, but denied knowing the teen. Police, however, found the missing teen at his home the following day. CCSD Police Sgt. Mitch Maciszak said the girl had been staying at Sprowson’s home for the past couple of months.
“She was a willing participant in this whole ordeal. No force was used. She was found in good health and unharmed,” said Maciszack.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and have not said if the pair were in a relationship. Sprowson was arrested at his work location in a private area. This was his first year at CCSD. Officers say his background check raised no red flags. He is currently being charged with Kidnapping, Child Abuse, Contributing to the delinquency of a child and Obstruction.
