The Internal Revenue Service is warning consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers. The scammers are often targeting recent immigrants.

Raphael Tulino of the IRS says in some cases, the caller even knows the last four digits of the victim’s social security number. He says they can also make it SEEM like they are calling from the I-R-S national toll free line.

The IRS recommends always asking for a badge number, and tell the caller you will call them back. You can verify with the IRS that it’s a scam.

Also, remember almost all correspondence is done by mail.
