Whittmore Notified Of Bar Discipline

(LAS VEGAS, KXNT, ASSOCIATED PRESS)–The State Bar of Nevada has initiated the disciplinary process against former Nevada political powerbroker and lobbyist Harvey Whittemore.

It filed a petition Friday formally notifying the Nevada Supreme Court of Whittemore’s May 29 conviction on three felony counts for unlawfully funneling $133,400 in contributions to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid through 29 family members and employees of his former development company.

The petition was filed four days after U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks of Reno sentenced Whittemore to two years in prison.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Supreme Court under its rules automatically suspended Whittemore’s license to practice law and referred the matter to the state bar for disciplinary proceedings that could result in further sanctions.

In its petition, the state bar asked the court to refer the case to its Northern Nevada Disciplinary Board in Reno, where Whittemore lives. He has been a member of the bar since 1977.
