(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–Nevada Republicans have re-elected Michael McDonald as the state party chairman, a move seen as a rebuke to Governor Brian Sandoval and other top state party leaders who had backed another candidate.
Meeting in Las Vegas, the party rejected Sandoval’s preferred candidate for chairman, Robert Uithoven, a lobbyist for Las Vegas Sands Corporation.
The vote was a display of the rift between party leadership and grassroots Republicans who carried McDonald’s re-election with 53% of the vote.
The party met at South Pointe in Las Vegas.
Sandoval had been joined by others in the state party hierarchy, including U.S. Senator Dean Heller and some top legislative leaders in lobbying for Uithoven.
