Las Vegas CBS KXNT – As lawmakers haggle over health care reform in Washington D.C., local activists are crying foul over tying ObamaCare to the federal budget.
A dozen demonstrators from Organizing for America showed up on Wednesday at the Las Vegas Social Security office to denounce efforts to defund the Affordable Care Act. They chose the venue because they say Social Security is among the services that will be hampered by a government shutdown, if that’s the fallout from political gamesmanship in the nation’s capital.
Organizer Susan Brooks called it grandstanding.
“They’re manufacuring a crisis in a very fragile environment,” she told KXNT. “And we don’t need that.”
Brooks noted that the Affordable Care Act is the law, and has even withstood a supreme court challenge.
Other volunteers shared stories about terminally ill family members who might have benefitted from having health insurance, but couldn’t afford it.
