CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — There are nearly 13,000 more students in Nevada’s public school system this year than in 2012.

According to the Department of Education, statewide enrollment totals 452,220.

That’s the official count taken on Sept. 20 and represents a 3 percent increase, the largest since 2006.

Clark County by far has the most pupils in kindergarten through 12th grade, with enrollment at 314,956.

Washoe County recorded 62,967 students.

About 16,000 students attend charter schools.

State Superintendent Dale Erquiaga says statewide enrollment has grown every year since 2003, with one exception. In 2009, at the height of the recession, enrollment fell by 770 students.
