Las Vegas – Caleb Herring threw for 140 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another 57 to lead UNLV to a 38-7 win over Western Illinois Saturday night.
The Rebels scored the second time they had the ball as Tim Cornett capped a 46-yard drive with a 3-yard run for the score.
The Western Illinois Leathernecks (2-2) came right back with a 10-play drive to UNLV’s 20 but could not convert on fourth down.
Herring threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jake Phillips to give the Rebels a 17-0 halftime lead.
UNLV added two more touchdowns in the third as Cornett ran for a 42-yard score and Adonis Smith plunged in from 4 yards out, giving the Rebels a comfortable 31-0 lead.
The Rebels are now 2 and 2 on the season heading in to next week’s first conference game in New Mexico. UNLV hasn’t won a road game since 2009 against those very same Lobos.
