(LAS VEGAS KXNT)–A woman who police say enlisted her 11-year-old son in torching the family vehicle appeared in court to face charges of arson, conspiracy, and child abuse.
Judge Rodney Burr set an October 1 preliminary hearing for Jaunita Carr, who was silent during the brief proceeding except to tell Burr that she understands the charges against her.
Juanita Carr’s son suffered second-degree burns over 40 percent of his body after his clothing ignited while he was setting fire to the vehicle. The boy used a gallon of gasoline that had just been purchased from a local filling station to burn the car earlier this month in a remote area near Silver Bowl.
Police believe the son and friend had taken the vehicle a few days earlier and then abandoned it. Police think the mother then intended to return to the vehicle — which she referred to as ‘a lemon’– and burn it. The police report notes Carr told an officer she was behind in payments.
