LAS VEGAS (AP) — State officials are starting to see green in the brown deserts of Nevada.
The Governor’s Office of Economic Development has been working to develop the state’s indoor agriculture industry as a way to capture some of the $2 billion annually that’s spent on food out of state.
Farming in the desert calls for creative techniques such as hydroponics, which involves growing plants in water, and aeroponics, which involves misting the roots of plants while they’re suspended in the air.
The industry is still small in southern Nevada, but economic development officials say they’re in talks with 10 businesses considering building, expanding or relocating in the state.
Officials say Las Vegas’ reputation as a culinary capital is a draw for businesses, with farmers hoping to win valuable endorsements from celebrity chefs.
