TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Tempe police say an officer shot and wounded a man who allegedly charged at the officer while threatening him with a cutting instrument.
Sgt. Steve Carbajal says the wounded man was taken to a hospital but that his condition is not immediately available.
Carbajal says details of the Thursday morning incident outside a restaurant at an intersection near the Arizona State University main campus are still being sorted out.
However, Carbajal says police approached the man because of a report that a person matching the man’s description had threatened a person at a nearby business with a knife or box cutter.
Carbajal says officers unsuccessfully tried to get the man to put down the cutting instrument and that one officer fired when the man charged him.
