CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — State officials say a backlog of jobless benefits is being cleared as a new computer system comes online.

As of Monday the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says 48,000 claims have been processed through the new system that was launched last week. Benefits for some people were temporarily delayed because of the change.

Online capabilities to file initial claims was launched Monday, but officials say it could be down intermittently while testing to ensure accuracy is completed.

Two new phone lines were added last week to handle the increased volume of calls. Officials say people filing initial claims should use the Internet access, while those filing weekly claims should continue to use the automated telephone system until further notice.
