Oxford English Dictionary Adds Twerk, Selfie As Words
LAS VEGAS (CBS LAS VEGAS) – Singer Miley Cyrus gave a demonstration on how to twerk during her performance at the Video Music Awards and now the word is one of many that was just added to the online edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.
The well-respected dictionary provides a quarterly update online showcasing words that have been added.
Twerk is defined as a “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance”.
Selfie is another addition to the dictionary and means “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website”.
Other words include bitcoin, emoji, hackerspace, and street food.
The dictionary also added abbreviations of words such as apols, which is short for apologies, and srsly, meaning seriously.
The Oxford Dictionaries team conducted research which showed that the terms added are strongly apart of popular culture and that is why they have been included in the update to the dictionary online.
“On average, we add approximately 1,000 new entries to Oxford Dictionaries Online every year, and this quarter’s update highlights some fascinating developments in the English language,” stated Angus Stevenson of Oxford Dictionaries Online in the quarterly update release. “New words, senses, and phrases are added to Oxford Dictionaries Online when we have gathered enough independent evidence from a range of sources to be confident that they have widespread currency in English.”
