Girls Basketball Coach Facing Lewdness Case
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say a 47-year-old Las Vegas middle school girl’s basketball coach is facing misdemeanor lewdness charges alleging he inappropriately touched female students.
Records show that Alfphonso Washington of Henderson made a court appearance Tuesday and was being held at the Clark County jail on $50,000 bail pending a Sept. 10 preliminary hearing.
Washington’s attorney, Michael Gowdey, says the case is blown out of proportion and there was no sexual contact between his client and the alleged victims.
Police say Washington taught and coached at Lied Middle School in northwest Las Vegas.
Clark County School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone told the Las Vegas Sun that Washington was placed on paid administrative leave when police opened an investigation in May.
Washington has been a teacher in the district since January 2003.
