Newlywed Struck, Killed By Car While Sitting Outside Home

OREM, Utah (AP) — Police say a 22-year-old newlywed has died after she was struck while sitting outside her Orem home by the SUV of a man accused of driving drunk.

Orem Police say around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Ashlee Zimmer was sitting on the curb near her car and smoking a cigarette when 26-year-old Ramiro Serrano Hernandez drove an SUV onto the sidewalk.

Lt. Craig Martinez says Hernandez lost control of the car, hitting Zimmer’s car and then Zimmer. Her body was dragged underneath the SUV, which then drove through a fence and hit a building.

Police say Hernandez was arrested about an hour later when he was found hiding behind a dumpster.

He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, automobile homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident.
