Man Accused Of Smuggling Cocaine In Car Lights
NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) — Federal authorities have arrested a Mexican man who allegedly tried to smuggle nearly 65 pounds of cocaine into southern Arizona in a vehicle’s side headlights.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Nogales say 61-year-old Gaston Delacruz Arriaga-Barrigan, of Hermosillo, Sonora, was taken into custody Wednesday.
Officers referred his vehicle for additional inspection when he attempted to cross the border.
They say a CBP narcotic detection dog alerted to drugs behind the passenger’s side headlight.
Officers removed 27 packages of cocaine worth nearly $591,000.
The drugs and vehicle were processed for seizure and Arriaga-Barrigan was referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
It was unclear Thursday if Arriaga-Barrigan had a lawyer yet.
