(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–The Sierra Club and the Moapa Band of Paiutes have sued NV Energy to clean up the land and water around the Reid Gardner coal-fired power plant.

The plant is scheduled to close in 2017, but the suit demands cleanup begin immediately.

The plant has been long associated with health and environmental complaints from the tribe.

“They’ve been burning coal out there since 1963 and there are acres and acres of landfills and slude, so there’s coal ash and sludge into the Muddy River”, Jane Feldman of the Sierra Club told KXNT.

The suit cites alleged violations of federal laws requiring the proper removal and disposal of polluted water and soil.
