Bartoli Beats Lisicki For Wimbledon Title
LONDON (AP) — Marion Bartoli won her first major title Saturday, defeating Sabine Lisicki (sah-BEEN’ lih-SIH’-kee) 6-1, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final.
Bartoli served the match out at love to become the first Frenchwoman since Amelie Mauresmo (AM’-eh-lee mohr-EHS’-moh) in 2006 to win the third Grand Slam of the year. The victory comes six years after Bartoli was beaten by Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final.
Both players were seeking their first major title, and their nerves showed at times. Bartoli lost serve in the opening game, then proceeded to win 11 of the next 12 games to go up 6-1, 5-1. But she lost three championship points in the seventh game of the second set before Lisicki pulled within 5-4. Bartoli recovered in time to closed out the match on serve and claim her first title in 47th career appearances.
The two combined for just 36 winners and had 39 unforced errors, including 11 double-faults.
